    Johns Hopkins Lyme Disease Clinical Research Center Opens

    APRIL 1, 2015

  • The Lyme Disease Research Foundation is pleased to announce the April 1, 2015 opening of The Lyme Disease Clinical Research Center in the Division of Rheumatology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
  • The Center was established with a major gift from the Lyme Disease Research Foundation and represents the culmination of years of extraordinary work by donors, staff, and members of the Board of this organization. We are grateful for the tremendous dedication and support of our donors.
  • The Center builds upon the success of Dr. John N. Aucott's patient based research program at the Foundation and brings this premier clinical research program to a platform of national prominence with the top rheumatology department in the world (Hopkins Rheumatology ranked #1 in 2014 US News & World Report)
  • The Center at Hopkins will enable the groundbreaking SLICE program (Study of Lyme disease Immunology and Clinical Events) to be strengthened and expanded, with the goal of advancing the understanding of disease mechanisms and improving diagnostics, treatments and patient outcomes.

    • Dr. Aucott receives Global Lyme Alliance Lauren F. Brooks Hope Award

  • John N. Aucott, MD, a renowned expert in clinical research on the diagnosis and epidemiology of Lyme disease, was the recipient of the Lauren F. Brooks Hope Award at the Global Lyme Alliance "Time for Lyme" Gala on April 11, 2015.
  • Dr. Aucott was honored for making significant strides in research and treatment in pursuit of a Lyme disease cure.

    • Health Care Costs, Utilization and Patterns of Care following Lyme Disease

    FEBRUARY 4, 2015

  • Lyme disease is associated with $2,968 higher total health care costs and 87% more outpatient visits over a 12-month period, and is associated with 4.77 times greater odds of having any PTLDS-related diagnosis, as compared to controls
  • Among those with Lyme disease, having one or more PTLDS-related diagnosis is associated with $3,798 higher total health care costs and 66% more outpatient visits over a 12-month period, relative to those with no PTLDS-related diagnoses.
  • Lyme disease is associated with increased costs above what would be expected for an easy to treat infection.
  • The presence of PTLDS-related diagnoses after treatment is associated with significant health care costs and utilization.

The Johns Hopkins Lyme Disease Clinical Research Center was founded by a gift from the Lyme Disease Research Foundation. The mission of the Center is to continue our patient-based research into all the varied manifestations of Lyme disease and to find better diagnostic and prognostic tests to improve the care of patients.



THE PROBLEM

Lyme disease makes hundreds of thousands of people sick every year; it is the most commonly reported tick-borne infection in the United States. Children are especially hard-hit by Lyme disease with the highest in incidence among children between the ages of 5 to 14.

There is an urgent need for research into the complex problem of chronic Lyme disease. Physicians need new tools to identify and treat patients who have persistent symptoms even after antibiotic therapy.
